What I say about myself….

I make teams happy. Dreadful faces, working long hours, high level of stress. This is what I have observed working in Investment Banks, Consultancies. Having Software Delivery background helped me to relate to their pain. But… is this what we want from life? Surely there must be more. Teams who I am coaching work less and deliver more. I use mindful coaching techniques and agile way of working to transform individuals as well as teams.

I have been recognised as a face of Agile cultural change at Barclays. Agile is a great example of stewardship in IT departments. It is an innovative approach towards software development emphasising self-empowered teams working together efficiently but in a sustainable way. I have run an Agile transformation in my own team and also trained over 1,000 Barclays IT employees.
Outside of Barclays I stand for Human values (IAHV)– I am an active volunteer of a large volunteer based organization – International Association for Human Values. I teach yoga, mindfulness and stress management .

On completion of an MSc in Information Systems from Brunel University, I began my career at BNY Mellon's Pershing EMEA, 13 years ago. Over this period, I have progressed up through the hierarchy to Vice President and I am currently focused on progression to the next level as a Group Manager.

My first role as a graduate was of a Software Configuration build engineer for the test regions. The team consisted of myself alone, and the role was challenging with the majority of the development team having little faith in a new graduate, to be able to take on the role. Thirteen years on I am now responsible for Pershing EMEA’s Software Configuration Management (SCM) team of nine engineers, promoting 1000 + releases across five change environments including Production.

When the opportunity arrived to form an SCM team, it bought with it many challenges, namely managing individuals who were older and longer serving employees, as well as setting up a team extension in India, where the associates initially struggled to accept me, a female, as their manager.

After overcoming these initial challenges and with the support of the team, we have been able to deliver significant change and enhancement to the SCM process, supporting business growth without an increase in resource cost (detailed in achievement section).
Seeking new challenges, over the last couple of years I have taken on a broader role within the technology group, with new management responsibilities for:

  • Release Management team - which requires growth and establishment of a formal release management function
  • Database Administration – overall management of the team and function as well as mentoring two new team leads
  • Technology Pre Sales – Representing and providing technology responses for all Pershing EMEA pre-sale opportunities
  • Acting as Interim Head of Service Management – while recruitment was on going for a permanent resource.

From as far back as woodwork and electronics classes at secondary comprehensive school, I have always been interested in technology. I started my engineering career in earnest at the age of 18, with a Year in Industry placement at an iron foundry in my hometown of Lincoln. I then studied Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Cambridge, graduating with a first class MEng degree in 2009.

For the next seven years, I was the Process Improvement Manager at RPC M&H Plastics in Suffolk (a premium manufacturer of plastic bottles and caps, primarily for the personal care market), becoming a Chartered Engineer in 2014. I was responsible for introducing new technologies (such as infra-red non-contact measurement of bottle wall thickness) and troubleshooting technical issues across the different moulding and printing departments. In 2015, I won the IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year Women’s Engineering Society Prize, in recognition of my work to engage and inspire young people into STEM careers.

Since September 2016, I have been a Manufacturing Engineer at TTP Labtech Ltd. in Hertfordshire. TTP Labtech designs and manufactures robust, reliable and easy-to-use instrumentation for use in drug discovery research. I work in the area of liquid handling technology; providing engineering support for equipment that can transfer as little as 50 nano-litres of liquid at high speed using custom-made disposable nano-pipettes. This role utilises the wide breadth of my knowledge, from electrical and mechanical engineering to materials science and computer programming.

Jessica started her career aged 5 as an Apprentice Electrician working weekends with her father. Aged 16 she attended college to study A-levels in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, but her complete dismay with the ‘learning to pass the exam’ style of process led her to complete a range of vocational electrical qualifications in parallel at night school. She qualified as an Electrician aged 19.

During this period Jessica also worked as a Sales Advisor for Maplin Electronics. She bagged a side project to develop a portable electronic uterine contraction monitor for a Cardiff-based medical manufacturer. Her solution reduced manufacturing costs by 99% but she continued to develop it using optical fibre technology leading to wider industrial sensing applications. She secured a patent with support from a London Livery Guild and approached the CEO of Maplin to fund an improved technology. Maplin agreed and Jessica was offered a position in HQ as R&D Advisor to the CEO. She worked with the Board of Directors to revitalise Maplin’s educational strategy, and was a founding member of the Maplin Foundation, a non-profit subsidiary for developing young inventors. She was also awarded the Intel IET Inspirational Entrepreneur Award for her efforts to commercialise her technology.

Aged 17 Jessica became the first female UK Young Engineer and began an Astrophysics BSc at Cardiff University in the same year. Two years later she was head-hunted by Cardiff University to become a Research Associate in Lightning Strike Protection for aircraft. After successfully building an international network of collaborators and customers, Jessica left Cardiff University to take up an engineering role with Sony, Pencoed in January 2016. She now heads up a small research team responsible for developing the next generation of manufacturing platform in collaboration with Japan, for consumption by Sony factories globally.

Initially, I worked as a software developer in a small software house and moved into project and programme management eventually managing a portfolio of 60 projects with a technology value of £36M and infrastructure of £11M. I led on the implementation of a project "practice structure" to improve the practice of project and portfolio management in 2 organisations.

I then moved into a transformation role to work with the programmes delivering trans-formative organisation and technology change. I was then given the opportunity to join the public cloud programme working with the team implementing a public cloud strategy at Barclays.

I have completed the AWS Solutions Architect Associate training and am looking to gain certification in the next 6 months and I am now leading the business engagement function where I am accountable for raising awareness of Cloud and how to adopt it across the Bank and identifying business units need in order to increase adoption of Cloud and to ensure Cloud roadmap aligns to business needs. I lead a team of Solution Architects as well as the function that provides information on what is available and how to use it, which we deliver via a website and a wiki. We also deliver tailored training to colleagues and identify the most suitable publicly available training for colleagues to consume.

I run a 2-weekly forum with over 700 invitees to share information about public cloud and am often seen as the "go to" person for cloud information at Barclays!

Lucy Muldoon was locally educated at The Plume School and Sixth Form College to A Level standard studying IT. Lucy had previous work experience in IT where she spent a week at the world’s largest company dedicated to industrial automation, overshadowing local software testing engineers.

Lucy decided to seek employment rather than go to University, preferring a work based apprenticeship in Technology as opposed to 3 years of further education with no guarantees at the end.

Lucy began working in the Technology department at Nomura Investment Bank in October 2014 as a Desktop Support apprentice studying her Level 3 apprenticeship in Systems & Networking. Lucy worked in IT Support for 2 years before being offered a new role internally working for the Messaging team, supporting critical Mobile Platforms within the bank. She went onto successfully completing her Level 4 apprenticeship in Systems & Networking and has most recently been promoted to Analyst and give a permanent contract with the bank.

Deborah Okenla

Following a few stints in the legal industry, Deborah Okenla ventured into startups in 2015 after attending one of Startup Weekends Global Hackathons.

She landed her first job at IncuBus Ventures where she’s played a pivotal role in the launch of their scale-up programme (backed by Market-Tech) working alongside mentors from Facebook, Instagram, 01 Ventures and more.

Since then, Deborah has worked with Capital Enterprise to help launch their investment progamme as well as Data Pitch, a virtual accelerator who’s Tech Innovation Board consists of reputable advisors from Forward Partners, Tech Hub, Tech.eu, Uber and more.

In 2017 Deborah started YSYS; a thriving Slack community made up of 100 + diverse founders, investors, creatives and techies in London. She is passionate about diversity and recently wrote an article highlighting the lack of visibility of black women in tech, catching the attention of Cindy Gallop, Mike Butcher and many others.

Deborah is experienced at launching accelerator programmes and building engaged communities, with a shared mission. She now the Membership Manager at Huckletree West and a #poctech Ambassador at Campus London.

Upon completion of a bachelor's degree in Information Systems from the University of Washington, I moved to Montevideo, Uruguay where I was an Ambassadorial Scholar studying South American economics. While there, I also initiated a Rotary project to donate over 200 computers to public schools and NGOs in greater Montevideo serving over 5,000 youth. It was my first taste of project management, and have since worked in various project management and consulting roles in enterprise software.

Alongside my career in technology, I have done a number of volunteer roles, such as community development supervisor in Costa Rica, served on the Seattle Board for Amigos de las Americas, and mentored several young people on career development.

In 2011, I was awarded a Rotary Peace Scholarship to study Conflict, Security, and Development in the UK. After completing my master's degree, I took a job at Bloomsbury Publishing as an IT Project Manager. In 2015, I pitched to Bloomsbury's exec in a "Dragon's Den" style forum to establish a Project Management Office. The idea was supported, and I was asked to establish and run it. Since then, I have built a team, established project management best practices, and led the delivery of a number of business change and systems development projects.

In February of this year, I decided to found my own (part-time) startup, LingoBites. It draws on my experience in technology, publishing, and languages to bring together short story authors from around the world with people learning languages. It is a mobile application currently available in the Google Play Store.

My journey began when I left India as a teenager and moved to New York to pursue my Bachelor of Science from Pennsylvania State University. I have since worked for multiple global investment banks in the US, Switzerland and the UK.

Beginning my career as a business analyst in Product Data with Merrill Lynch Asset Management and witnessing its subsequent merger with BlackRock Asset Management when my career was in its infancy was eye opening. I turned the cultural and operational challenges that accompany a corporate merger and turned it into opportunities. I was handpicked to relocate to London and lead the gap analysis on key risk and reconciliation functionalities between the two firms to ensure that the merger concluded successfully.

I discovered that I was passionate about implementing innovative solutions to challenging programs. My quest to find the next big challenge led me to Credit Suisse in New York as a Lead Business Analyst within Private Banking IT. By using UML modelling for business process definition, I successfully led requirements analysis for several Greenfield programs such as integrated order management and Uncovered Options Risk calculator, which significantly reduced uncovered unsystematic risk exposure. After moving to Zurich, I qualified as a certified Financial Risk Manager and further accentuated my Risk Management expertise.

My global experience, coupled with expertise in trading and risk management, became a natural stepping stone into Project Management within Core Compliance Services IT to deliver complex compliance programs and manage senior relationships with stakeholders in London. As a subject matter expert in trade, ecommunication, and financial crime surveillance, I continue to successfully lead distributed technology teams across Singapore, London, New York, Zurich, and Wroclaw to employ Agile and deliver key compliance initiatives covering 30+ jurisdictions globally, which mitigate risk and also address global and local regulatory mandates.

After having my son three and a half years’ ago, I decided to make a change and tackle head-on the lack of customer-centric digital delivery in commercial insurance. I took responsibility for creating a SME / Digital division integrating an InsurTech provider into an incumbent insurer for the benefit of small business customers.
