Enrolment is now open for 42 London, the tech school offering free coding courses to bridge the gender gap and address UK skills shortage.

The UK is facing a critical skills shortage in the tech industry, with over two million vacancies in IT last year alone, surpassing any other sector. Recognising the immense potential of a coding career, 42 London, the innovative coding school, is spearheading efforts to bridge this gap and support women in the sector.

According to recent data, people who identify as women account for just a quarter of tech workers, highlighting the need for concerted efforts to address this imbalance. In response, 42 London has taken a bold step by offering free coding courses to all in the UK, effectively breaking down the financial barrier that often deters women from pursuing coding education. Considering costs to study in universities are now over £9,000 a year, 42 London’s tuition-free programme can be a game-changer for aspiring women coders.

Lilian Pontes, the Country Director of 42 London, shared her thoughts on the significance of their inclusive approach, stating, “At 42 London, we believe that talent knows no gender. Our mission is to create a level playing field and empower women to unleash their potential in the tech world. By providing free coding courses, we are not only closing the gender gap but also nurturing a diverse and inclusive tech community”.

First step

As part of its commitment to train future-proof coders, 42 London is now taking applications for its upcoming piscine (swimming pool in French). Running from 5 June, the piscine is a month like no other, during which candidates work through a selection process that is demanding, yet incredibly rewarding, and serves as a rigorous test of their abilities and diligence.

“I can say without a shadow of a doubt that I have never learnt as much and as quickly as during the piscine. Beyond the intensive learning, the piscine is also a human experience. Overall, the atmosphere is very energetic and supportive”, Mia Combeau, Ecole 42.

Those who succeed in the piscine will embark on a three-year course (including an initial common core lasting 18 months or less) to become fully qualified programmers. During their course at 42 London, students can specialise in their preferred domain, such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data and others.

The school’s strong reputation and focus on practical skills make 42 graduates highly sought after, with expectations of securing jobs with salaries averaging £50,000 per year.
