Dr Habiba Lais is an Ultrasonic Innovation Scientist at Tribosonics, a transformational technology business taking its unique sensing technologies into uncharted and valuable territories, to deliver scale and impact.

Previously from a non-STEM background, Dr Lais enrolled at Brunel University London in 2011 to pursue Engineering with an Integrated Foundation year and progressed onto Aerospace Engineering. She completed an industrial placement year 2014/15 at Brunel Innovation Centre (BIC) as a Project Technical Assistant. During this time, she worked on InnovateUK funded fouling removal projects using high power ultrasonic transducers.

In 2016, Dr Lais received a First Class Honours in Aerospace Engineering B.Eng. with Professional Development. Upon graduation, She continued her journey in ultrasonics by undertaking an industrial-led PhD at the National Structural Integrity Research Centre (NSIRC) and Brunel Innovation Centre, developing a non-invasive ultrasonic technique for removing fouling on subsea O&G pipelines. She continued as a Research Fellow at Brunel Innovation Centre to extend high power ultrasonic applications into the nuclear and renewable energy sectors, before joining Tribosonics in early 2021 to develop ultrasonic sensing applications within the nuclear, transport and renewable energy sectors. Dr Lais has authored in several peer-reviewed journals and conferences: Most notably in Ultrasonics Sonochemistry, a leading international journal in the field of acoustics and ultrasonics.

As an Ultrasonic Innovation Scientist, Dr Lais applies her ultrasonic expertise directly into customer focused projects, through developing bespoke ultrasonic measurements as a tool to collect valuable data which translates into actionable analytics. This in turn completes the feedback loop to measure and improve operational performance by optimising energy usage and reduce downtimes of a given processing facility. she is pioneering ultrasonic innovation by managing technical milestones to hit technology readiness levels which enables her team to fast-track the measurement solution to the customer as a complete sensing-as-a-service system. Dr Lais is also responsible for the full-stack development of the ultrasonic technology from modelling, sensor construction and data collection/processing. Her portfolio spans across several technical applications and industry sectors including infrastructure, energy, nuclear, and sustainability. Dr Lais is championing the company knowhow database, which underpins key technical knowledge in which she creates multiple dissemination streams to distribute knowledge transfer and has been extremely beneficial for the Apprentices at Tribosonics.

Alongside her technical and business development duties, she is the wellbeing officer at Tribosonics where she analyses survey health statistics and creates action plans to roll out improvement of staff wellbeing company wide. Outside of work, she is an active STEM ambassador, driven to inspire young females and raise diversity for the future generation, a recent example being her work as a local school governor at her local primary school.

She is passionate about contributing to the world’s sustainability goals through sensor innovation whilst raising the awareness of how ultrasound can be designed to achieve this; particularly through embedded/smart components to drive production optimisation to achieve sustainability, safety, and energy goals.
