Hannah Davies | Head of Data Academy | Admiral Insurance

I graduated with a Mathematics degree in 2011 and started my career as a Commercial Analyst. I worked with a small produce company and developed insights and reporting for them which helped them grow they supermarket relationships. Following 12 months in this role, I returned to Academia and spent 4 years working in the University of South Wales as a Lecturer in Operational Research and researcher within the Information Security Research Group. My area of research was calculating the return on security investment calculations for risk avoidance. Following this, I wanted to get back into industry and work more closely with Data and Technology to impact business decisions. I joined Admiral Insurance to work as a SAS developer within their Fraud Analytics team and spent 3 years in that team building their Fraud Analytics portals for investigators to use, and their graph solution to identify relationships in our data. Then, I moved to a project moving Data from on premise to the Cloud and worked as a Product Owner for Data Pipelines, and then a Product Lead of a subtribe of people working in Data Engineering, Software Engineering, Cloud Engineering and Quality Assurance. After 2 years of working within the Tribe, I started the Data Academy department from concept to design and execution. Today, the department I lead works across 4 main areas of focus; uniting our Data Community, Data Training and Development, Data Culture and Mindset for the whole business and our Data Brand. We train across GCP products, programming languages, techniques and concepts and offer development programmes for rising stars. I am an advocate of diversity across data and technology and have partnered with Women in Data, as well as helping deliver our partnership with Code First Girls to bring an Introduction to Data MOOC to all age 16+ for free. I am a Chartered Mathematician, gaining my award in 2016 and have presented across different conferences, webinars and podcasts. I also volunteer with Reed on their Mentorship Programme.
