Hannah Smithies

Hannah is part of the Digital & Data Product team at HSBC Securities Services, contributing to the development of strategy for new applications and digital client experiences.

Perhaps inspired by her history degree and specialism in the English Civil War, Hannah’s early career in journalism showed her interest in the wider implications of innovation, disruption and the people it impacts. She trended towards writing about emerging technologies in trade magazines, including front page features for Global Investor back in 2014 on applications of big data analytics in asset management and the nature of the threat of cyber attacks to the industry.

Despite not coming from a technical background, Hannah quickly was quickly able to develop her interest into an active contribution of ideas, analysis and empathy when she first joined Digital & Data on graduate rotation in 2017. Working with the DLT Centre of Excellence team in Pune inspired in her a love of experimentation and she was invited back to the team on completion of her programme.

Now, in her first year in role she has led the implementation of two internal applications for the business, is part of a diverse range of projects including on Symphony messaging platform and Ai chatbots and contributes a voice to the wider discourse about the future direction of digital, particularly in the area of next generation client-facing applications.

Hannah passes on her passion and enthusiasm for technology, she organised an event “Get Into Coding” through a partnership with social enterprise Girls Code: First and HSBC women’s network Balance, encouraging other women to embrace a learning pathway to technical skill. She currently sits on the HSBC China Connect Committee as Digital Co-Lead and is passionate and is an active advocate of the graduate scheme.
