Solution Architect Full Time

Job Description

You’ll be working with Central Government Customers to understand and elaborate their requirements, acting as a conduit to communicate these to the engineering teams.
You will be an excellent communicator both internally within your project, as well as externally to customer stakeholders to facilitate decision making and co-ordinate design activities with internal teams.

You’ll enjoy working as part of a team, collaborating with technical leads, engineers and business analysts to define innovative solutions to problems, underpinned by robust delivery and engineering methods.

Your experience will cover software design, infrastructure (in particular cloud infrastructure), delivery methods and working closely with Enterprise Architecture community. You won’t be expected to be an expert in all areas, but you should know enough about each to make informed decisions on the best approach to follow for each.

About you

You will have experience in the majority of the following:

• Shaping solution designs following a structured methodology as appropriate to the project
• Assessing solutions against varied Enterprise and Strategic criteria, and presenting solutions to Enterprise community
• Defining infrastructure requirements for a cloud-based software solution to support a scalable and resilient application
• Inputting into and documenting the implementation of the design in collaboration with other team members such as Application, Data and Security Architects
• Ensuring the design meets key functional and in particular non-functional requirements, enabling through-life scenarios of the solution to be satisfied
• Working with customer technical authorities to ensure that they have a clear understanding of architecture and design proposals at an appropriate level
• Working with Engineering teams to promote good practice in engineering methods, e.g. development, automation and testing
• Retaining overall ownership of solution through delivery and transition into operation

And will have applied it in some of the following domains:

• Open Source and COTS integration
• Integration patterns and architectures

Key Responsibilities

• Working with Architecture team to Develop and Maintain Systems Architectures in line with product roadmaps and frameworks
• Contributing to the development of solution architectures, ensuring consistency with specified requirements agreed with both external and internal stakeholders
• Working with Engineering Managers and Technical Authorities to promote and maintain control and discipline around engineering processes and procedures
• Working to deliver the solution with other disciplines including project managers, business analysts, technical authorities, developers, testers and support staff
• Owning technical risks and working to reduce and mitigate them at the earliest practical opportunity
• Retaining overall ownership of the solution through delivery and transition into operation

Required Skills and Experience

• Experience of successfully leading the technical delivery of solution designs of complex systems that include multiple hardware and software components supplied by different teams
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills
• Ability to clearly and confidently explain system architecture verbally and visually to customer stakeholders, including non-technical specialists
• Proven Team player who can demonstrate an ability both to influence the team and promote ideas, but also listen to and consider other views
• Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the capture of architectures, designs, frameworks and requirements in engineering tools and other documentation
• Documented knowledge and skills in the common design frameworks (e.g. TOGAF)
• Domain knowledge in:
  • Cloud hosted System design on and migration to Microsoft Azure:
    • Azure Data Factory and Pipelines
    • Azure Databricks
  • Information systems, including:
    • Data architecture, processing, storage and retrieval
    • Service layer architectures
    • High performance computing
    • Monitoring and Logging Solutions
  • Security architecture and design
    • Azure Security Centre
    • Compliance with Information Governance standards in relation to PII, GDPR etc.

Desirable Skills and Experience

• Experience of AWS
• Experience of Data Engineering
• Experience of working with Agile software development teams
• Experience with tracking and knowledge sharing tools, e.g. Atlassian Jira, Confluence, MS Teams
