I’m a career changer who started out as an Editor for Sound On Sound magazine. I was there for 12 years and promoted to Production Editor, leading the editorial team to produce the monthly magazine. While I was heavily involved in the publishing aspects of production, I also trained with the Head of Design to produce article layouts. As Production Editor I found that I required more tools than I had access to. For example, monitoring the monthly progress of production, author costs, communication between departments and advertising sales.

Without a budget for such tools, I began creating complex systems on Google Sheets, challenging myself to find ways to make it behave in new ways. After a while I realised that I was essentially building my own applications.

I’d been looking for a new career direction for some time, and doing this made me look into software development.
