Nichola Clifton

I have always been interested in crafts, design and making things but at school I wasn’t aware that Product Design careers existed.

I was lucky enough to find it when I completed a foundation art and design course at UCLAN. From week one of my degree I was hooked and I graduated with a first class in BSc(Hons) Product Design in 2009. I was lucky enough to a job as a trainee Product Designer at a company in Blackpool where I got my first taste of making my ideas real. I learnt about robustness testing, tooling and manufacturing and these skills set me up well to apply for a job at Dyson. I joined the Research, Design and Development Department in 2011 and began working in the Floorcare Category. I have since played a key part in Upright, Cordless and Robotic Vacuum Cleaner projects and have recently moved over to the Health and Beauty Category. My career at Dyson has helped me build me mechanical engineering skills and I have recently become a Chartered Engineer with iMeche. In the last 12 months I have embraced learning about Hair Science and am passionate about sharing this knowledge and using it to support the wider engineering team develop high performing products that have benefits for every hair type.
