Sophia Chambers-Dixon

I began developing websites as a child for friends and family, which stemmed from my interest in developing cascade sheets (css copy and pastes) for online gaming sites. Since then I’ve become addicted!

After becoming a teenage parent, I worked as a dental nurse, eventually progressing to a career in Project Management. During this time, I found it very difficult to get support to get back into work, if you hit a certain ‘criteria’ – which in my case was having young children. During this time, I decided to try and support my community (and others like me who wanted to work, but struggled to understand where to start) and set up a support site called ‘The Donny Job Shop’ which helps residents in Doncaster (my hometown) get back into work, education and training opportunities, I wanted to use my story to educate, support and inspire others, to reassure others that no one needs to become a statistic , that there is opportunity for all individuals out there no matter what their background. The site has now got over 14,000 and we help individuals further by supporting them in their journeys, with such things as: CV updating, funding advice, work experience and job applications/cover letters. In 2014, we were nominated for the South Yorkshire Business Awards.

In 2014 I decided to take a risk and continue my passion and search for employment in the tech field, I went back to University and studied Software Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University, graduating with a 2.1 (68%). I was the only female to graduate, which was rather upsetting looking back. I continued to work as a Software Engineer throughout my studies.

in 2020, I was fortunate enough to get my dream job as a Team Lead Engineer for the IAPI Team at Egress, a team that helps develop a product called Prevent, which works on providing advice (such as a wrong recipient) to a user, once ingesting and learning that user’s individual behavior over a period of time.

My tech stack has ranged from Javascript, Node, React, Docker, GIT, Microsoft Azure, PHP, Python (to name a few) throughout my career.
