I’ve always been interested in how the world works and how things fit together, which led me to a degree in Physics.

After my first year at university, I won a scholarship with National Instruments (NI), an engineering firm. As part of the award, NI offered me a paid placement opportunity to learn their software and develop my technology skills as an undergraduate.

Working in an engineering firm opened up a whole new world for me. It taught me client interaction, confidence and considerably improved my coding. Most importantly, it helped me realise that I enjoy most working at the point where engineering meets business. I have fun finding ways for technology to solve specific business problems in a faster, more automated way than before. To do that well, I need to understand both the relevant technologies and the business.

This experience led me to Deloitte consulting after I graduated in 2015. In the four years since, working in the Digital Finance Technology team, I’ve learned how to build consolidation systems which help some of the biggest businesses in the world understand their finances and I’ve qualified as an accountant along the way. I now build twelve-dimensional databases and debate daily with accountants in the businesses I support.

Always ready for the next challenge, I’ve been fortunate to be at the forefront of some of the most exciting new technologies in the consolidation space, first learning and applying the new technologies and then training the next generation of graduates to help them develop their skills in this exciting space.
