Kate van Lamoen

I have spent the last 9 years designing, delivering, and managing large-scale complex technology enabled business transformations, on the topics of digital, innovation and customer in the financial services industry and government.

While I have an academic background in law and the humanities, I have always had a fascination with the ability of technology to transcend cultures and individuals and democratise complex processes.

I started my career in New Zealand where I had the opportunity to work on a major technology programme for a government owned insurer. We were charged with designing a transformation programme to not just modernise legacy systems but truly benefit the end-customers at the heart of operations and deliver the right services, in the right way, at the right time. I had my first eye opening moment there when we had the opportunity to speak with real customers from diverse backgrounds and learn how they engaged (or couldn’t engage) with the online services provided at that time.

After that, I continued my career with EY, where I have been very fortunate to work in many countries, been involved in many projects for a wide-ranging set of organisations within government and financial services. A common thread has been exploring the boundaries of how technology can be used to improve the lives of end-users, both customers and employees. Since then, I have held many roles in technology that have stretched my knowledge and capabilities beyond anything I could have imagined. I have worked on app development, core system design and platform development.

I relish the opportunity to lead and motivate diverse, multi-disciplinary teams with varying backgrounds ranging from engineering, computer science, data science, business, law, customer experience and qualitative and quantitative research. For me, technology truly comes to life through all these different lenses and I hope to continue to play my part in this exciting and ever-changing field.

I have spent over 10 years in the Tech industry across Asia Pacific, United States and United Kingdom advising multiple global organizations on Cyber Security.

I come across as an exemplary professional particularly focused on solving the identity and access challenges that enterprises face today. I graduated in Electrical Engineering, but I chose to be in Cyber Security to keep my adrenaline high - it is always ever changing, ever inventing, and ever innovating. I strongly believe that with the imminent cyber threats we face today, securing one’s own perimeter with the right credentials and privileges is the fundamental control that every enterprise should have.

Digital identity becomes extremely crucial given its artificial construct using a user’s identifiable attributes can be easily breached in today’s digital era with the advent of Artificial intelligence and Blockchain identity where often informed consent, and ethical trust is treated with lesser priority. The environment in technology is continuously evolving, so to succeed you need a growth mindset as nothing stands still. I always ensure that I am open minded to learn from the stance of a beginner, happy to adapt fast, and deliver faster with an inclusive attitude.

Samah Dagash

Samah is a Senior Manager within the Technology Risk team at EY, London.

Having joined EY as a graduate, she specialised in IT audit and governance, and actively complemented her skills through secondments in related disciplines such as financial fraud, banking payment systems as well as due diligence exercises for mergers and acquisitions. She spent two years at the Royal Bank of Scotland specialising in controls for AML and Sanctions compliance systems.

Recognising that international exposure and an understanding of the commercial world would be instrumental to her growth, Samah left EY to explore other frontiers, taking up a Program Manager role in a large conglomerate in Africa, where she led the IT Strategy efforts for the company’s agriculture, food manufacturing and distribution businesses. Despite this role being out of her comfort zone, she was promoted to a Business Development role in which she served for 4 years, working with a range of corporate and governmental institutions, and securing funds for expansion from some of the world’s largest banks.

During her time working in Africa, she supported in her spare time, young entrepreneurs with technology and social enterprise start-ups, and recognised the increasingly fundamental importance of wider applications of technology in resolving human challenges, changing societal behaviours and encouraging creativity and inclusion. She also developed a renewed respect for the importance of controls and governance in technology within organisations of all sizes.
She returned to EY in 2018 as part of the firm’s “Reconnect” program, aimed at reintroducing women back into the Finance and Technology sectors after time away. While she had to re-set her career, within three years of returning, Samah re-established herself as one of the most capable, respected and inclusive members of the team.

She is currently the lead global IT coordinator for one of EY’s largest audit clients in the banking and capital markets industry, navigating the complexities of a changing technology landscape and teams across over 20 locations globally.

Samah contributed to the firm’s Gender Advisory Board proposals for upskilling returners, leads her team’s Diversity and Inclusion working group and has been selected as a member of an EMEIA-wide working group that is driving innovation and quality in IT audits through the standardisation of processes.

At university, I didn’t realise that a technology career path was an option for me; I’m so glad I decided to pursue technology consulting as each and every challenge I see clients grappling with has a technology angle at the heart of it.

I started my career at KPMG and my first project taught me the software development lifecycle and how to apply agile to continuously deliver value on a programme. The breadth of roles I covered exposed me to business analysis, training users how to use the new system, writing test scripts for developers and what it means to provide post go-live support. I was fascinated by seeing the idea for the project come to life and seeing clients actually using what we had built. The agile aspect of this first project is something I have continued to use in my career. I now focus on digital strategy and transformation pieces of work at EY, most recently leading projects to design a new product for a FinTech and to deliver a real-time cognitive assistant for a bank.

Outside of client work, I am passionate about the people agenda and I lead the People Team across 300+ technology consultants, focussing on recruiting a diverse pool of talent, developing colleagues with the right skills for the market, and building out our fantastic technology consulting culture.

In my role as Senior Manager I am looking forward to building a strong pipeline of talent (including many women!) and coaching junior talent to build high performing teams who can understand, assess and deliver valuable digital transformations alongside our clients.

My interest in technology started when I was studying at Stanford university and tried a Computer Science class in my senior year.

Having focussed my studies on International Relations and Mandarin previously, the Computer Science classes took me out of my comfort zone but I quickly realised how valuable they were in terms of teaching me how to think through challenges logically and how to think innovatively about solving problems.

When it came to applying to jobs, I wanted to pair my interest in the varied nature of consulting with a tangible skill set which is where I found my home in technology consulting. I started my career at KMPG, working in the technology strategy arena and moving to EY has helped me to hone my interests around digital strategy, agile delivery and next-generation digital banking platforms. I enjoy exploring how technology can be leveraged to solve or improve business issues and have found the most impactful projects are when business, technology and a customer-centric lenses are brought together to deliver change.

Alongside client delivery, I have recently been involved in launching a new learning pathway focussed on Cloud and Agile with an objective of ensuring all technology colleagues are equipped with the latest training in these two key areas. I enjoy supporting junior talent and have a focus on mentoring females both inside EY and outside of the firm. I am also involved with graduate recruitment and take part in the EY Foundation Smart Futures programme which provides internships and mentoring opportunities to school students.
