Karamjot Jaswal

After gaining a First Class Honours in my BSc in Information Technology Management for Business, I joined IBM’s Consulting Graduate Programme in November 2019!

I have grown, learnt quickly and achieved my first promotion in under a year. I developed new skills in Product Lifecycle Management, IBM Maximo and Curam's Social Programme Management as well as working with Dassault Systèmes 3DExperience platform which was a steep learning curve going from non-technical to technical. Upskilling quickly in these various technologies have allowed me to add value to my clients as well as helping IBM in their growth areas!

Outside of client work, I am heavily involved in IBM’s Diversity & Inclusion initiatives, leading the Talent Attract Workstream for our BAME Business Resource Group which contains over 700 members, including initiatives to attract a more diverse pipeline of talent to IBM. Through this role, I work with many external education establishments to supply BAME mentors for our P-Tech programme (https://www.ibm.com/thought-leadership/ptech/index.html). I am responsible for managing 25 IBM mentors across all seniority levels. I have also collaborated with Queen Mary University to drive an e-Mentoring program where BAME employees mentor BAME students which pointed them to STEM career options and showcased IBM as an inclusive employer.

I have used my career to also raise awareness and encourage more women and people from diverse backgrounds to join the IT Industry as well as helping to look at my company’s hiring strategy to enhance the talent we recruit on top of my career which is helping implement crucial IT systems for a range of clients! I recently have mentored three interns; giving them coaching on problems they face as well as encouraging them to follow through with ideas they have to analyse issues within Diversity in Tech!

“KJ has brought energy, passion and insight into the BAME BRG and is a role model for someone that cares about creating an inclusive workplace where everyone can be their best. She has been most effective in supporting the schools programme and inspiring young people in future digital roles through sharing her own journey.” Rashik Parmar, IBM Fellow & Vice President Technology – EMEA.

Externally, I am passionate about raising awareness around mental health. I created a social media platform on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/transforming_trauma) to support those who have experienced trauma and anxiety after my personal experience with trauma! It’s following has grown immensely, gaining over 1000 followers in seven months – even gaining attention from a Hollywood actor as well as helping a lot of people and breaking the stigma around mental health!
