Lesley Jonas-Nartey

I became curious about technology early on but I was unsure of the right career path for me.

My approach was to choose opportunities that would give me the space to further explore my options.  Curiosity turned into passion while studying A Level Information Communication Technology and I then went on to study Computer Science at University College London.

As a delivery lead and consultant for IBM, I help businesses accelerate their digital transformation journeys.  I have led multi-discipline teams, utilising cloud and mobile technologies, to solve real world problems in Healthcare, Public Sector and Industrial sectors.

In addition to my day job, I lead external initiatives which have included hosting a series of conversations with IBM’s clients and partners on the topic of creating inclusive workplaces. I support the next generation of technologists via mentoring, leveraging my network to connect others and sharing strategies that have allowed me to get to where I am today.  In May 2020, I joined the leadership team for 500 Women Scientists whose mission is making science more open, accessible and inclusive.  As the technology SME, I bridge the gap between science & technology and provide expertise in strategy development.

What drives me?  My own experiences in education and the workplace inspire me to amplify diverse and often unheard voices in the sector – not just my own voice but also those of colleagues and individuals in my wider network.  I want to challenge the stereotype of who works in tech and shine a light on role models who are actively being the change they want to see – not just talking about it.

We are at a unique moment in history where we can direct the use of emerging technologies to build an equitable and inclusive society.  I will continue to play my part so no one is left behind.
