Maria Jose Perez Calvo

From a young age I was fascinated by electronics and mechanics which led to graduating as an Industrial Engineer at the European University of Madrid.

While studying, I gained hands-on engineering experience at Sepsa developing the data handling and front-end user interface for monitoring of train transformers. This was complemented by a placement in China where I performed on-site technical support and assisted with commercial negotiations with suppliers of industrial control systems.

My passion for robotics drew me to continue my engineering study with a 1st class honours BEng in Mechatronics Engineering at Staffordshire University. During this time, I developed an interest in product design which I pursued through courses at internationally recognised centres of product design excellence at Stanford University and Aalto University of Helsinki. These experiences drove me to reinforce my design skills through an MSc Integrated Product Design with Distinction at Brunel University during which I developed projects with Sony, BT and Coca¬ Cola. A personal highlight was the creation of a working prototype of shoes for the visually impaired which used haptic and audio feedback to allow them to navigate without any additional aids. This project received the first place GradEX award for Technology and Design.

I began my career at Dyson as an electronics engineer investigating new technologies for sensors and actuators. My desire to utilize both engineering and product design skills steered me to the Design and Product Experience Team. In my last five years at Dyson, I have been leading the Human Machine Interface development of projects across different product categories including the Dyson Pure Hot and Cool, Dyson Pure Cool Me and Dyson Airwrap. The combination of engineering understanding and product design creativity has allowed me to introduce a number of new technologies applied to enhance the user experience and launch products across several countries. In my current role as an Advanced HMI Design Engineer, I regularly work closely with James Dyson, to meet the challenge of making our new technologies intuitive for the users and helping them experience the same excitement that we feel when we design them.
