Sarah Burne James | IBM

Sarah has shown great drive and enthusiasm in building her technology career, joining IBM as a graduate without a background in Technology. Just three years later, she is working towards certification as an IT architect. In this time, she has been shortlisted for the WeAreTheCity Rising Star Award (Technology Category, 2017), and identified for the Top Talent programme in IBM’s consulting business.

In her current role, Sarah architects and builds prototypes across a wide range of technologies, to demonstrate the value they can bring to IBM's clients. These vary from paper prototypes to full-stack development projects. Her role also involves mentoring hackathon teams, and providing technology coaching. Most recently, she has been teaching on the new Digital Skills Academy, both for IBM early professionals and for a financial services client.

In her previous role as a blockchain consultant, she lead an innovative blockchain MVP for a major banking client, and used this experience to write a blockchain reference architecture. She designed and delivered blockchain training materials, and trained others to deliver them.

Prior to her work on blockchain, Sarah's roles covered various stages of the project lifecycle, from design work to test and defect management. She ran design authorities for multiple programmes, as well as enterprise architecture work.

She was a mentor at a recent girls-only CoderDojo encouraging 100 girls to learn to code. Sarah is a keen inventor, currently working on patenting four of her ideas. She volunteers as a Brownie leader, and leads STEM activities with her Brownie group as often as possible . Sarah also regularly volunteers at parkrun UK.
