Tech Nation Report 2021

Tech Nation Report

UK tech pioneers are creating the future. In the face of extreme challenge, profound disruption and deep uncertainty, resilient tech leaders are rebuilding our economy.

They are developing groundbreaking technologies, creating new jobs and supporting societies to thrive across the world.

The Tech Nation Report has been the UK's state of the nation report on tech since 2015. But in 2021, looking to tech's past achievements is not good enough. We focus on what’s next for UK tech; the challenges that are being faced by stakeholders in the ecosystem; and how scaling companies have the potential to build back in a way that delivers benefit for everyone.

The UK has been historically strong in deep tech: R&D intensive, innovative tech developments. But in order to continue this global leadership, more investment and emphasis will need to be placed on both new tech creation and application. From healthtech and fintech to Net Zero and edtech, the Tech Nation Report captures the transformative impact of technology and the companies developing and applying groundbreaking tech, and assess the effect this is having on people the world over.

UK remains 'hotbed' for tech talent

The UK remains a 'hotbed' for tech talent, employing five per cent of all high-growth tech workers globally, according to a new report.

The research, conducted by Tech Nation, found that the UK is in front of Japan, France and Indonesia when it comes to employing high-growth tech workers.

In the UK, Insurtech and Fintech were the biggest employers among high-growth digital tech firms in 2018, employing 24 per cent and 18 per cent of the high-growth workforce respectively.

Cyber, AI, and Cleantech all feature in the top ten sectors for employment in high-growth tech firms. Investment data shows that AI, Cyber and Big Data are growing in importance for UK tech scaleups. This means that the UK may be about to see more jobs generated in these sectors.

Eileen Burbidge, Partner, Passion Capital & Chair of Tech Nation said, “The UK has an incredibly pivotal role in the global tech scene."

"Nowhere is this more evident than in the Fintech sector where the UK is ranked number one in the world; an enviable position that has been established with decades of hard work, entrepreneurial talent, innovation and supportive policymakers."

"I’m confident that we have all the ingredients needed for continued success and even greater acceleration of the tech sector here in the UK.”

UK Prime Minister, Rt Hon Theresa May MP, added, ‘‘The UK is a global tech powerhouse."

"I am immensely proud of our country’s ambitious tech scaleups."

"These companies are delivering significant economic value to the nation through the investment they raise, the jobs they create and the innovative products and services they deliver’’.

About Tech Nation

We believe the UK is the best place in the world to start and grow a digital business

If you’re an ambitious tech entrepreneur, then we’ve supported thousands of people like you through all stages of business with our activities as Tech City UK and Tech North.

Our story began in Shoreditch in 2011, launched by the then Prime Minister David Cameron, to support the East London tech cluster known as London Tech City — or Silicon Roundabout. Since then we’ve been on a journey, spreading our activities to cover other parts of the UK, and have set up Tech North to run programmes across the North of England. Last November, Prime Minister Theresa May and the Chancellor Philip Hammond announced the launch of Tech Nation, consolidating Tech City UK and Tech North’s impact.

Now as Tech Nation, we’re expanding our network of growth programmes, events, skills and data resources to reach all corners and clusters of the UK.

What we do continues to be shaped by your voices. We just finished a listening tour to meet representatives from the UK’s vibrant tech landscape and understand how best to shape our national network to meet your challenges.
