Why work at QBE?

Why work at topper - QBE

We want everyone who joins us to enjoy the benefits of a rewarding and inspiring future within a culture that is inclusive, flexible and supportive.

We’re an international insurer and reinsurer offering a diverse portfolio of commercial, personal and speciality products, as well as risk management solutions. We employ a team of more than 11,700 people, in 27 countries around the world.

What makes QBE such a special place to work?

We asked some of our employees what makes QBE such a special place to work and one of the items that came at the top of the list is our culture. We are open, friendly, collaborative and supportive and we work together to achieve common goals and resolve problems.

Treating people with respect is part of our QBE DNA and we encourage employees to bring their ‘whole selves’ to work.

Another important element is that our management teams are supportive, approachable and flexible and they like to encourage collaboration and new ideas. They provide challenging work and encourage teams to take ownership and accountability.

Importantly, some of the ways that QBE go above and beyond to make the company such a special place to work include a comprehensive support structure of information on wellbeing, free membership to the mental health headspace app, charity days to help local communities, a work from home equipment allowance and fund matching all money raised for charity.

How do you embrace Diversity at QBE?

We are all different and at QBE we believe that we should embrace each other’s differences.

We know that diversity of thought, background and experience enables better decision making, improves the quality of our delivery and helps us to meet the needs of our customers. Our vision is to empower our people to be their best by creating an environment where everyone’s contribution and voice is valued, where we have a collective sense of purpose and a community of empowered individuals working collaboratively.

Our Inclusion and Diversity strategy is based on 3 core pillars and we are committed to driving change across each of these;

Diverse Workforce; We know diversity is good for us now and in the future. We drive leadership representations and a diverse pipeline of talent.

Inclusive Workplace; We fundamentally believe everyone should be included. We build inclusive capabilities, listen to our people and support flexibility and wellbeing.

Connected Marketplace; We are a positive influence for societal change. We encourage a diverse supply chain, and endeavour to support and enhance equitable access for our diverse customer base.

 Do you have an internal women’s network at QBE?

We’re very proud of our ‘Women in Tech’ network who meet regularly to connect, share, inspire and support women working within QBE’s EO Change and Technology Service teams. We discuss topics of interest, changes we’d like to action to support our community of women and collaborate to promote the role of women within QBE.

We’re not just a ‘talking shop’, we have engaged in several initiatives within QBE to help make the lives of women easier.

Our network is split into a working group focusing on exploring the art of the possible, what others in the industry are doing and implementing some powerful changes. We also have the advocate group where the working group present ideas for feedback and promotion.

What do you look for in a potential candidate?

We recognise that there’s no one size fits all and we seek out people with a diverse range of skills, backgrounds, experience, perspectives and ambition. We create opportunities for our people to achieve their full potential by empowering you to do meaningful work from day one. We are looking for people who will confidently challenge the norm and constantly strive to improve and build something better.

What benefits or reward programmes do you provide for employees?

At QBE, we want our people to feel rewarded and inspired to perform at their best. That’s why we have created At My Best. It’s our connection, our way of showing we have your back.

We understand that priorities can change depending on your life stage.

That is why our blend of wellbeing initiatives and benefits offer flexibility to suit what matters most to you. These initiatives cover 5 key areas;

Northern Trust

Greater is...fitting in because of your differences

We believe diversity, equity and inclusion are inextricably linked. That’s why we’re working to create an environment where every individual feels respected, supported and valued to fully contribute to our shared success.

When you join the Northern Trust community, we make a pledge to you.

Here’s what you can expect from day one:

A culture of care and collaboration

Our commitment to partnership is rooted in a culture of care that drives success for clients and partners alike. We value our partners as individuals, offering each person the flexibility to balance their aspirations in work and in life.

How do we show this?

We foster an environment where collaboration is prioritised over competition, and we support and invest in one another to create stronger teams, stronger work and stronger outcomes for our clients.

In EMEA, we’ve created a Women in Technology network to support the development of female talent in technology.

The group, sponsored by our Chief Technology Officer Alison Pain, meets monthly, sometimes with global counterparts to provide a community of learning, sharing best practice and access to role models (internal and external) whilst encouraging networking.

A focus on individual career development and growth

Every career path is different. We’ll help you map yours. We see our partners as people, working closely with them to create plans that work for each individual.

Each of our partners comes with unique skills, perspectives and goals. We believe in empowering our partners with the resources and opportunities to Achieve Greater and realise their full potential. We foster their ambitions, develop their skills and provide countless opportunities to lead and make an impact.

Our EMEA Women in Technology group have also created a programme entitled Together we Thrive, which provides our EMEA female technologists an opportunity to participate in workshops on self-identified tech topics. It allows us to broaden our internal network whilst sharing knowledge, learning and developing our own expertise. Topics to date have included;

  • Cyber Security
  • Domain Driven Design

Dedication to a more diverse, equitable and inclusive workforce

We are united by the belief that diversity, equity and inclusion are not only essential, but connected.

It’s an approach that sets us apart, driving us to develop new and authentic ways to foster an environment where every partner feels respected, supported and valued.

“True diversity can only exist in an inclusive work environment, where any individual or group feels welcomed, respected, supported and valued to fully participate and contribute to our success.”

Sarah Boddey, Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion officer, EMEA and APAC

We strive to challenge the status quo, building on our successes to continue setting new standards.

How do we show this?

As part of our digital modernisation journey, we created a data mesh – a market-leading platform to enable us to gain access to fast and secured data while also allowing us to move faster, predict behaviour and deliver more innovative and personalised solutions to our clients.

In addition, we are proud to have sponsored the WeAreTechWomen One Tech World conference. This innovative conference continues to show existing women in the industry and those who want to transition in, what that world of future tech really looks like. It also involves encouraging women from all backgrounds to consider tech careers, so that we can contribute to the creation of products and systems that are truly inclusive.
