Viktorija Jusko
I was born in Latvia in 1991. Daughter of a butcher and primary school teacher; I enjoyed an upbringing largely outside, spending summers picking berries and mushrooms in the forest.

My first real engagement with computers and the internet were afternoons spent at the local Internet cafe, playing Counter-Strike with my other 12-year-old friends. From a young age I was fascinated by computers and the wealth of experiences they could provide, and stories they brought to you of foreign cultures and ideas (I was weirdly into WWE as a pre-teen).

I didn’t have a particular career in mind but knew I wanted to go abroad. I also enjoyed maths and my family felt a business degree was a good choice. This lead me to the North East of England to study International Business and French at Newcastle University. In order to fund my studies, I worked a whole host of weird and wonderful jobs. From sorting post in a Royal Mail depot and packing Christmas toiletry sets in a factory, to making cocktails in the now-closed-but-forever-part-of-Geordie-heritage, Tiger Tiger nightclub.

During my studies in the UK and also France, I developed a lust for travel and upon graduating, joined a small specialist travel company. I spent the next 5 years in the world of travel sales and enjoyed countless trips to remote and unique destinations. However, I felt things were stagnating and so started researching coding. From the start, it seemed fascinating, communicating in languages I’d never heard of and solving problems I’d never even considered.

Much like many others, my job was shaken by the pandemic; I was swiftly furloughed and after 3 months, laid off. I will forever be grateful for the time I was given on furlough, as this allowed me to take the leap and discover I absolutely loved coding! After clocking somewhat heroic hours on Free Code Camp and Code Academy, plus pooling the rest of my savings, I got a place on the Makers Boot Camp.

In March of 2021, I was fortunate enough to join the wonderful Funding Circle. I’ve since been promoted to Engineer 1 and am part of a fabulous team. I love the values that our company upholds and enjoy nothing more than seeing the positive outcomes for the small businesses we help to grow.
